Finches Birdhouse

A gardener's relationship with birds is one of mutual benefit. The gardener provides some of the basic needs of birds and the birds help keep the population low insects, while treating us an inexhaustible source of entertainment. Birds take their role as insect predators seriously. A single bird gobble 500 to 1,000 insects in an afternoon.

Birds have four primary needs: food, water, shelter and a place to raise a family. As we shall see, these requirements are easy to achieve.

Food

Two types of seeds, white millet and sunflower seeds, black oil, will attract most common seed feed on birds. These two seeds should be a pillar in your feeders. To broaden the diversity of birds that visit their feeders, Add the specific seed species, such as millet red, black and gray striped sunflower seeds, Niger thistle (for goldfinches, pine siskins finches and purple), Milo and peanut butter (for the chickadees and titmice white streaks).

Beef suet helps birds maintain body heat in cold climates. Hang the plastic mesh bags of tallow or stained pine cones in melted tallow tree branches. Woodpeckers are particularly grateful for this treatment.

Deadheading, or removing spent flowers, is the most easy to keep plants in bloom. Annual especially will benefit from regular deadheading. The flowers are there only to produce seed. Once the plant seed, has no reason to produce flowers.

Many perennial flowers also rebloom if deadheaded. The exceptions are perennials that bloom in a single flower stem height, as Astilbe or iris and perennial flowers that require a cooling period to set their flower buds.

Water

An ideal water source for birds should be about three inches deep and three feet off the ground. Movement and sound to capture the attention of a bird. You can create water movement through the suspension of a container that drips from a branch over a birdbath. Fountains and waterfalls are favorite places for birds singers, and sprinklers in place the plants near the birdbath will attract a wide variety of feathered visitors.

Housing

Birds need shelter for protection from the elements and allows them to hide from predators. Twiggy dense shrubs, and evergreens are the refuge of choice for most birds.

Nesting
Sites

Different species of birds have different nesting requirements, and can be found ready-made bird houses or build-it-yourself plans for almost all species of birds. Choose birdhouses that are weather resistant and have a pitched roof to shed rain. There should have holes in the sides and bottom for ventilation and drainage. A hinged or removable roof is a bonus for you because it makes cleaning much easier. The aviary should be cleaned after each nesting season.

When hanging the aviary, the position of the entrance hole away from prevailing winds.
